Oh look. Abortion rates increased during Bush's term. What a surprise.

What does this tell us? Economic policy and abortion are not separate issues; they form one moral imperative. Rhetoric is hollow, mere tinkling brass, without health care, health insurance, jobs, child care, and a living wage. Pro-life in deed, not merely in word, means we need policies that provide jobs and health insurance and support for prospective mothers.

More than that, I believe the Bible has injunctions to be charitable? Rich men and heaven and camels and needles?

I'm not anti-abortion. But I am against the things that make people feel forced into aborting.

Pro-choice. It's about choice.

This post echoes the very things I was thinking about last night... the fact that Richard Nixon was the very last Republican in that office who felt a "christian" obligation toward the poor. I also thought about the sickening despair one feels while living in a state of poverty, and the even more sickening sensation of knowing one is about to bring someone else into that world... it boggles the imagination.

Anti-Abortionists: If you've never lived in your car, or you've never known anyone who lived in their car, or you've never really read a book (Joyce Carol Oates has some pretty down and out characters, she'd be a good one to read) where people were that poor, what business do you have telling people how they should live their lives? That they can risk any sense of dignity they might have, asking for public assistance? (But you might take that away, too, calling for an end to "handouts".)

I don't know. I'm just tired. If Bush wins this election, I might go all Mujaheedin on his ass and strap a shitload of dynamite around my middle and go shake his hand and do the world a favor. I don't know what else to do.
