Question!

On the sign into the library, they kindly inform us that it's prohibited to put our feet on "chairs, cassels, or other library furniture". That's all well and good, but what on earth is a cassel?

Come to think of it, it might've been carrel after all. Which raises another question, 1. why and 2. why do they expect us to know that word?

I can't even begin to hazard a guess at what a cassel might be.

Ok, I'll hazard. Cassock? Though I must admit, I have never seen cassocks in libraries.

My only guess is that they meant "table", but how they'd get "cassel" from "table", I do NOT know.
