On the sign into the library, they kindly inform us that it's prohibited to put our feet on "chairs, cassels, or other library furniture". That's all well and good, but what on earth is a cassel?

Come to think of it, it might've been carrel after all. Which raises another question, 1. why and 2. why do they expect us to know that word?

I can't even begin to hazard a guess at what a cassel might be.

Ok, I'll hazard. Cassock? Though I must admit, I have never seen cassocks in libraries.

My most educated guess... it's those things that newspapers hang on.

Cas·sel ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ksl, käsl)

A city of central Germany south-southwest of Hanover. Chartered in 1198, it was a munitions center in World War II. Population: 202,158.

hmm, yes. Please do not put your feet on any german cities during your stay in the library.

Isn't the purpose of the rolling stool thing... to put your feet on it?

Not when you are sitting, only when you are trying to step up and get books off a shelf.

Are you sure it isn't carrels? At our library they have these sectioned study tables with walls, like a cubicle but all in a line. They call them carrels.

Yeah, it looks like a typo for carrels, although it's kind of an odd typo.

That or a really spelling-impaired person aiming for "castles", but I have not seen any castles in libraries recently.

Weird. "Cassel" isn't even in the AOHell dictionary, nor is it in my Webster's.

Maybe they figure since you're in a library, if you don't know what it means, you have every means imaginable at your disposal for looking it up. :p
