I hope they both lose.

Are we seeing the beginning of the self-immolation of the billionaire class, discuss.

ETA: I am trying to get banned from Twitter rather than leave but so far Elon has not responded to my repeated use of the word cis.

Well, the big trend among the 0.01% for the last couple of years was preparing for the apocalypse. Now they've done that and are sitting around waiting for it to happen, so I guess self-destruction is the new hottest thing. Sort of; 'nothing really matters because it's all going to burn'. So they do things like this, or take risky 'adventures' with shady submarine companies etc...

It's fun when the people with all the money and power turn nihilist, isn't it?

For certain values of "fun" yeah...

I'm minded of a semi-joke idea that was going around in the 90's. One that maybe ought to be revisited.

It was suggested that what we ought to do is set off the nuclear alert. Make the rich and powerful, all the politicians and generals and other rich bastards, think that this was it, the end of the world, nuclear apocalypse style. So they'd all scurry off down to their bunkers, leaving the rest of us common folk topside to die...

Then we concrete the doors shut and leave the buggers there.

A++ idea, no notes.

It wouldn't even too hard to do. People have hacked the emergency address system, and the nuclear alert sirens, and lets face it, right at this moment an unannounced first strike by Russia is plausible at least.

So the USA thinks missiles are inbound, and go on alert posture, which triggers the russians and that sets everyone else off in a domino effect... the only hard bit is making sure no-one actually nukes anything.

Little secret here: Those missiles had their fangs pulled in the early 90's. I know for a fact that a hacker collective comprised of Russians, Americans, Europeans etc, all worked to insert a tiny bit of code into the ICBM guidance systems, at source so it wouldn't be detected. It would only activate in the event of an actual launch. the missiles would go up, and detonate harmlessly in space at apogee. (it's part of the self-destruct system, so it's all of about 23 lines of code.)

Thing is... they're still using the same hardware as back then. (Heck, the US military still use 5.25 inch floppy disks to update target data!) So that hack is still there, undiscovered, since it won't activate except during a live fire.

Besides, not even sure if the Russian missiles would launch... most of them are 30 years old by now, and not very well maintained.

As for the newbies that came along since then... guess where they get their source code from?

The 90's produced some really good hackers, in all senses of the word... and none of us wanted to die.

They have, for nearly thirty years. The only reason I mention it now is because the risk of an ICBM exchange is lower now than ever.

However, battlefield nukes are another matter. Those weren't really a thing back then, so unless someone is keeping up the good work (and I'm so far out of the loop I have no idea) any nuclear exchange is going to be localised.

Also, by my analysis, Russia wouldn't be trying to turn nuclear power plants into dirty bombs if they had a reliable nuclear arsenal. I think their nukes have rusted into uselessness.

Nominally hoping Mark gets the worst end of it as he's already ruined the world while Elon hasn't made much progress outside of ruining Twitter and most women he's ever gotten up with.

I mean, may they both need memorials for having enough money to solve poverty worldwide between them and not doing it and for all the lives that will and have ended and people who will and have suffered because of it but otherwise yes, Mark worst off please.

Oh well Elon's mom said he can't fight. Imagine being so rich that you could say "my mom won't let me fight" and not be embarrassed about it.

He's a troll.

You missed the good old days when his wife Justine had an LJ (still does; far as I know she still updates) and he'd come hang out with us. Back then (2011-12ish?) he was mostly just the SpaceX dude and even then he was a troll. I tangled with him once on someone else's LJ (forget who's; not my own or any of my close friends') and yeah *smh*
