No shock there. It's scary outside. You're stuck inside either alone or TRAPPED WITH YOUR FAMILY. Either you're suddenly unemployed or you have to work from home (joy). Your Netflix and chill has entirely too much Netflix and too little chill... and to add insult to injury, you're probably watching kid's shows because your kids are there with you.

Why wouldn't you load up on the snacks now?

Plus, kale goes bad. Oreos don't.

Out of snacks. Loaded to the gills on kale, quinoa*, and spinach - and worried by the time I hit stores again snacks will be gone.

I've never eaten so much junk food in my life, though. Maybe just having it around in greater quantities than usual increases how much of it one eats, as that was like, a six-month supply in less screwed-up times, gone in just a few weeks.

*One box, which is already too much.

There's no "comfort" in quinoa.

Pat and I were laughing last night about how we hadn't looked, but we bet the ice cream has been devastated. We were musing about what people were buying because Pat eats reduced fat peanut butter. So when he went to the grocery he discovered all the regular peanut butter was gone, but ALL the reduced fat peanut butter was in place!

I wish we were stocking up on snacks. The parents keep loading up on, specifically, *healthy* foods like kale (literally), apples, pita chips, and non-dairy ice cream.

I WANT MY JUNK FOOD.

For me it's the opposite - I stocked up on healthy food and am rationing unhealthy snacks in a effort to use the situation to improve my eating habits :D

I hadn't bought cookies in ages, but having started self-isolation about a week before everyone else, the barren shelves in the store after they closed all the schools here were depressing. So I got, yes, Oreos and chips. I've been rationing the Oreos, but the chips went pretty fast. Yesterday at the store I got more of each. I've been avoiding fresh produce because people paw it, and quinoa never crossed my mind. Actually, except for soup/ramen, paper products and cleaners including laundry soap, my store was almost back to normal yesterday.

Mine had ramen, but was limiting customers to one case each. Still no paper products, dish soap or any brand of AP flour but the house brand. They also (sensibly) emptied all the bulk foods that required a scoop or spoon, though the the overhead, gravity fed ones were still in use.

Lots of meat and produce (except for ginger root, not a surprise).

We have no junk food but our emergency supply of Lindt chocolates since we are both on Weight Watchers - I have to lose weight to have surgery. But some Oreos would be fine right now!

Lindt's the greatest. Luckily it* hasn't been hoarded too much around here so far.

*In case it does run out I'm also stocking up on Nestle 63% dark chocolate chips in a bag. They cost, ounce for ounce, a fraction of what Lindt bars do, and while I'd never say they taste just as good, they do the thing quite nicely.

I'm doing all the grocery shopping for the family because I already have to leave the house to go in to my office two days a week. Right now we have two kinds of kale in the fridge, plus collard greens. And I bought quinoa last week (I love vegetable soup with quinoa). When I asked my kids to put their requests on my shopping list last time, here were some of the items from my 13 year-old son:

candy
ice cream X 2
cool chips like Doritos or Takis
TOASTER STROODLE

and his list trailed off with a plaintive "please i am so hungry"... Now, understand that our fridge, freezer, and cupboards are practically bursting with food...but apparently I was slacking off on the junk food!

This is true. I'll be doing a big grocery shopping run tomorrow, and I'm seriously contemplating buying a cheesecake.

As for the TV shows...

our local PBS station has switched the day time programming from edutainment cartoons (think Arthur) to Nova, American Masters, science shows and such. So you can watch with your kids and get educated too!

Huh, I would have put quinoa in my last grocery order if I'd thought of it! (Instead I asked for 10 pounds of rice and a thing of couscous, and got 3 pounds of rice and no couscous.)

It has gotten very tough to find quinoa in LA, and it's sold out online, too. Also rice, beans--dried and cannned--pasta, and jarred spaghetti sauce are in short supply. I'm nearly out of cous-cous, too, and couldn't find the plain brand I wanted. There is plenty of junk food on the shelves here, with the exception of Chocolate Cheerios. There are forty-leven other kinds of Cheerios to buy but not my favorite.

My favorite local brand of chocolate candy is suspending production for the first time since WWII.

I had picked up a package of limited edition oreos just before this all hit and man I wish I had picked up a couple. They were Trolls edition with poprocks in the cream. It was so fun and every time I ate a cookie my mouth "sparkled".

But for some strange reason apples are rationed at the local Whole Foods, and bananas entirely unavailable. You'd think all those people locked up with their Oreos would leave the apples for me. :(
