This is a stupid question, made even moreso by the fact that LW should've asked her local neighbors, not some far-away columnist. Also, all NYC kids take public transportation to get to high school - school bus service ends here after the 6th grade.

Date: 2026-05-24 06:40 pm (UTC)If I was giving her practical advice, it would be that her son doesn't need to learn the entire subway system, he just needs to how to get to and from school. Even if there are multiple options, one might be sufficient. For example, at one point I took the E train into the city in the morning, and some afternoons I took the 7 partway home and changed for the E at 74th-Broadway, because I enjoyed the above-ground part of that. Someone else could have just taken the E train in both directions.
So, get a map, and maybe practice the trip ahead of time if her son will be changing at a complicated station like Times Square, rather than taking one train between two more straightforward stations.
I was taking the subway alone when I was ten, and looking back, what seems noteworthy is that my parents were confident that I would actually go to the dentist if they sent me by myself.
