Of course, the original ball pendulum wave is better IMO (low-fi background music of Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven which reminded me of late 80s/early 90s MOD demo audio files and the Romanian ethno-rock band Phoenix, especially their 1975 Cantafabule album). There are also these pendula:

That subway-riding question is a subset of "Dear Columnist, who is right here and why is it me?" The LW even admits that her husband has more experience here.

If I was giving her practical advice, it would be that her son doesn't need to learn the entire subway system, he just needs to how to get to and from school. Even if there are multiple options, one might be sufficient. For example, at one point I took the E train into the city in the morning, and some afternoons I took the 7 partway home and changed for the E at 74th-Broadway, because I enjoyed the above-ground part of that. Someone else could have just taken the E train in both directions.

So, get a map, and maybe practice the trip ahead of time if her son will be changing at a complicated station like Times Square, rather than taking one train between two more straightforward stations.

I was taking the subway alone when I was ten, and looking back, what seems noteworthy is that my parents were confident that I would actually go to the dentist if they sent me by myself.
