I have a terrible time cooking a steak anything over "medium rare". My preferred state is warm through, but barely cooked, lol.

I don't know if you have one, but an electric grill might actually be easier than a stovetop - and I mention that because I used to cook steaks ON the stove, before we got an electric grill, and my stovetop attempts were usually pretty bad.

(And some water in the bottom flat plate of the electric grill cuts down significantly on the smoke level.)
