Impeachment isn't a solution either. That'd make Pence the president.
In fact, as I pointed out to a friend who was joking about assassination, if you check out the presidential succession law, you'd have to take out damn near the entire cabinet and a few folks in Congress to not have a problem person in the White House.

At which point, the cure is most definitely worse than the disease.
Pence doesn't have the support system. He would have the cooperation of much of Congress - but he'd lose all support from the middle-ish Republicans, and there are a few of them who really don't want to live in a theocracy.
Pence would have to shift around all the cabinet postings (he'd certainly want to) and we'd get several months of confusion before he could firmly take over. And of course - he isn't free of the Mueller investigation; he may not have openly colluded, but he was part of the "keep quiet and pretend to be busy" crowd that was happily committing treason, there.
I am in favor of "keep throwing sand in the gears" as a survival tactic.
Pence is at least a fucking grown-up, and acts like it. I'm not so sure he couldn't get the support system if he tried - and it probably wouldn't take all that long. Impeachment takes a while, and all that time, Pence is working.
Yeah. I know. I don't understand how we got to this place, of electing someone so unqualified and unsuited to his office. He makes Bush the Second look almost competent.
There's a huge number of middle-class white people who firmly believe the reason they're not millionaires is affirmative action and "political correctness." And there's also a huge number who think "government is all fucked up and full of lying scumbags; let it all burn," and are entirely oblivious to what the government does when it's not getting media attention... like, fixing roads after disasters, and regulating air travel so planes don't smash into each other and fall on cities, and keeping our past nuclear mistakes wrapped in lead barrels.
