I don't live in a big city, I live in an agricultural town. My parents who voted for Kerry live in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. So does my grandmother. A friend who voted for Kerry lives in a very rural state. I don't get it.

If you read Savage Love, the sex advice column in the Onion, he talks about how we live on Islands. Little Blue Islands in the Red Sea (yay for my puns!). I think that works as a better comparison.
