You know how people sarcastically say "Do you want a cookie?"

Well, let's admit it: I do, in fact, want a cookie. Yes, yes, human decency is its own reward, but I'd still like to have a cookie.

And that doesn't just go for masking. I would very much like a cookie for all of it.

It is very annoying to me that the only cookies available are the bitter cookies of sarcasm and not the delicious cookies of righteousness and justice, or, barring that, actual literal cookies.

I want the flavour of cookies called "everyone else[1] wearing a mask too, so risk levels go down for me and everyone else"

[1] apart from people with legitimate medical conditions meaning that they can't

Yes I do want a cookie for masking at work, even though no one else does. I am keeping a person (myself) out of our failed health care system, freeing up resources for the idiots. I'm helping reduce the spread of a deadly disease and brain damage and heart disease. I should at least get a cookie if not an award.

We can eat cookies together, because I keep masking too.

Brownie points cannot be exchanged for actual brownies. I have asked my boss (more than once, just to be sure.) This is injustice.

(Also, in my store on the West Coast, we still have many people masking! Employees and customers alike! I'd say maybe 25%, which is not a lot but it isn't nothing.)

There's a huge difference between someone who is finally doing what they should have all along, and that other people are also doing--e.g., men who expect praise for doing something close to their share of the housework--and wanting credit for (still) doing the uncomfortable right thing when other people aren't, because it's inconvenient.

I think what I'm groping for is partly how imbalanced things are, and partly whether the good/bad behavior takes more away from other people than it gains the individual. So, if Alice cuts in line, Bob and Cecil and Fergus each have to wait longer, but the total waiting time for the group is about the same. Her gain is directly their loss, but the total waiting time doesn't suddenly double--she's stealing a minute or so from each of three people. If Bob refuses to mask indoors, his gain is some bit of physical and/or psychological comfort, and the potential burden on other people is a lot worse than that.

Yeah, I'm with you.

I did not stay home and wear masks for three damn years, at cost to myself and my own health, to not even get a cookie.

My wife works in my state's third largest hospital. I continue to mask when in stores partially due to her. Partially, due to having lost faith in humanity in general.

You deserve a cookie. If you were closer, I would offer you one of the ones I got at the store tonight (oatmeal raisin, if you care for that), because *I* wanted a cookie for all of it. *wry*

I would very much like that cookie, for every year and for continuing, because it would help to be acknowledged and treated for continuing to treat this seriously.

I still mask up in stores. I haven't heard anyone make snide remarks about it here, so it's curious that happens up there as I'd expect people up north to be more accepting of mask wearing. But maybe it's more likely the more people one comes into contact with, which for me is very low.

Gauging by how long it took me to figure out what you were writing about here, it might slide right by me even if they did make remarks. If they'd asked me that about a cookie, I'd probably reply "No thank you" thinking to myself that whatever cookie they were offering me probably wasn't vegan, and that I'd have to take off my mask to eat it, so no thanks.
