When I was a kid, I used to get nightmares where I was trying to say something but no words would come out. Pretty regularly, actually, and I'd wake up with a sore throat.

And then they just stopped before I grew up - actually, pretty much before my teens.

That's how I forgot all about them. I have no idea why I even had them. As I see it, there are a few options:

1. Something something psychology that's long since lost in the mists of time

2. People often had trouble understanding me outside the family, and that's how dreams handled it

3. IDK, just one of those things

4. It's like when you have to pee or hear an alarm clock - your dream tries to integrate this input into its scenario. I *did* have a lot of allergies as a kid (and now), so maybe my throat was sore for that reason or illness and my dreams just worked it in?

No idea! But they were awful dreams and I'm super glad they stopped.

Maybe your unconscious was trying to get you to speak, but it didn't have control of the proper muscles and thus you dreamed of being frustrated in it.

I still have dreams where I scream as hard as I can but it only comes out as a whisper. I hadn't thought of the allergies explanation!

I think that is one that quite a few people have had at some time (I read up a bit on dreams for a couple of my own stories. I was astonished at how many folk had or have the one about their teeth falling out.)

I'm glad you don't have them any more.

In my case it's my body doesn't always disconnect the way it should so I'm trying to use my physical throat to say dream things, but I'm too asleep to quite work it. I wake myself up that way a lot.

I get something similar in dreams. I'm trying to argue with idiots or convey important info and my voice goes to a whisper, if that. Trying to *scream* out something so as to be heard over the person (or group) and having something *I* can barely hear come out is majorly frustrating.

And I'm almost certain that it's my feelings of being ignored or not listened to in real life.

I've integrated real life things into dreams, like that. Such as, the alarm ringing may be a phone in my dream until I wake up. Dreams are weird!
