Judge John Hodgman on Farming Crickets
Phoebe writes: I want to farm crickets in our home for our own consumption, but my husband is against it. He cites my previous project failures (compost worms) and existing responsibilities (kids). I argue that it’s simple and worth a try. We already use commercially produced cricket flour every day!
I don’t want to know how your worm farm failed — I presume it was very gross. But I can appreciate why your husband might feel your pivot to raising crickets (then freezing them into a stupor, then dehydrating them and then grinding them into flour) to be a terrifying (and loud) act of hobby escalation. That said, I love this idea for three reasons: Crickets are the protein of the future; it will be educational for your children to watch you pulverize and eat their bodies; and they are less gross than worms. But if this one flops, that’s it. No moving on to mealworms or whatever.

Date: 2020-07-08 02:21 pm (UTC)Unfortunately the husband is correct in this case.
I mean, I am ALL FOR eating insects are a great source of protein. It's just that home production isn't all it's chalked up to be sometimes.
I hope there is a follow-up to this letter.
