I was going to make Doro Wat, but then I started thinking - hey, I'm not Ethiopian, what if it's all weird to do that? Or what if my recipe (though really yummy) is embarrassingly inauthentic and somebody knows?
So I thought I'd make something Belgian. I want to make mashed potatoes, but I know somebody else is bound to do that. Though really, I ought to go ahead and do it anyway, other people don't make mashed potatoes right. Potatoes alone do not mashed potatoes make. You have to have, like, carrots and stuff in there. And lately I've been making mashed potatoes with apples too. Mmm, that's good. We have a lot of potatoes to use up, and a lot of apples as well.
And for sure I'm not showing up with frites :)
Can't do rabbit until they sell rabbit at the local supermarket (I'm not being sarcastic here, they *do* sell rabbit periodically there. It's a weird store in many ways, probably because our corner of the island is all different ethnic groups and they all eat different things), and I don't think they're doing that right now.
Which leaves me with waterzooi. Or waffles, but really. My sister may be reading this and going "What the heck waterzooi, I never ate that!", but, indeed, she has. Waterzooi is, loosely, "stuff". In a skillet. (How you can have recipes online for stuff in a skillet, I don't know, but people do. Of course, considering that's the bulk of all meals for all people everywhere and everywhen, I guess I'm just being persnickety.)
Except that all these recipes say I need to separate a number of eggs. We have eggs, that's no problem (I'll still make berbere this weekend just so I can make devilled eggs!), but I hate separating eggs, especially when I have no use for the whites. I'm just lazy. My mother goes "Well, make meringue cookies!", but if I'm too lazy to separate the eggs I'm much too lazy to make more cookies!
So I guess I'll make waterzooi. With mashed potatoes on the side. I'm not going to dinner at Ana's school and having to eat substandard mashed potatoes.
