For, like, a year. Then they stopped that. Nobody teaches people to skate figures anymore, it's not expected. It's boring and you don't do it. You just skate around in a pretty dance with music.

So, if you aren't expected to make figures anymore... why don't we just change the name?

Actually, contrary to popular belief, you are required to make figures. For skaters to rise to the senior level and compete at the U.S. nationals, you need to have passed around 16 tests, eight of which require free skating, a program with the required elements, and eight of which are called moves in the field, which are literally the figures. Things like the figure eight, bracket, loop, three-turn, etc, all parts of skating figures, are expected to be performed in these tests on different edges, backwards and forwards. They're usually considered easier than the free skate tests but are no less important.
