I'm thinking I'll make gingerbread this year - send some to people who pass me their addresses, make a gingerbread house...

Hm. Wait. What do I need for a gingerbread house? I need the basic gingerbread ingredients, right? And frosting, white. And possible frosting in other colors, yes? And gumdrops and peppermint sticks and such... this is starting to add up!

But I *will* at least try this this year, now that I've discovered that gingerbread doesn't *have* to taste stale and nasty.

Mum has this recipe that's about 100 years old, and it's the best ever, imho.

There's frosting, and then there's sugar-based concrete, which is what you use to keep the gingerbread houses together (we make gingerbread houses at Halloween).

If you can't find one, remind me and I'll dig out my recipe.

Not at all. It's the Castle on Castleton Avenue, which was a hospital until it burned out in the inside. There's a movement to give it historical status and make it stable enough not to fall down on people, so it could be rebuilt, and an equally large movement to just tear it down already.

Hmmm... I guess I've always had an interest in abandoned buildings, and I'm curious to find out the full story... Also, I've been wondering about that icon for a while and just never got around to asking, so it's a long standing curiosity. :)
