Honest curiosity here.

I try to comment only when I have something interesting to say. Or when I'm so overwhelmed by their brilliance that I'm completely incoherent. Or, sometimes, when their husband/grandmother/fish has died and I think they consider me to be close enough a friend that my commenting won't be an intrusion, then I leave a vague comfort-type comment.

No other reasons, really.

The T on this keyboard is broken. I wonder if we have another keyboard lying around which I can hook up to this computer....

Which, honestly, since I'm supposed to be in class now, I don't have.

Oops.

Pretty much the same reasons as you. And if it's a post asking for opinions that I don't have to think too hard about (like this one).

I comment when... I have a comment? Heh. No really, I comment when I have a question, an answer to a question or just generally have something to share related to the post. I hardly ever leave posts just to say congrats, sorry, offer condolences or whatever simply because... I don't know. They feel hollow to me. If I care enough about the original poster, I'll probably talk to them about it on IM or something instead.

That too for me, and also if I need to get that person on AIM/Yahoo etc for another reason or if I have something for them.

Similar reasons plus adding in time considerations and computer considerations. If something goes "boom" I normally dont go back to comment, I just shrug it off...

Definitely in cases like this where the person posting asks a specific question or asks feedback of some sort. This is also usually the only time when I'll comment in someone's journal who doesn't have me friended back. Otherwise only when I have something to add or if the person has made it very clear they like comments even if they're silly or not really useful.

Also, when I'm asked to comment. ;)

For every comment that I actually post, there's at least another that, once I've finished writing it, I decide it's not worth posting and delete.

I comment rarely, because I have this weird thought that people will go "Who is that?" and be all freaked out (mainly I have this weird thought because it's happened to me a couple of times).

Otherwise, for much the same reasons you do. Though with close friends' journals, I feel okay in commenting with something totally unrelated.

Well, for me your reasons for commenting apply, with a few other things. I try to comment when I think what I have to say will be useful or helpful, especially if someone is asking for opinions. Otherwise when I'm trying to cheer someone up or I want more clarification, or if I have something silly to say that I can't hold back any longer.

My commenting goes in bursts; I go for weeks without saying anything, and then for a few days I'll comment to a bunch of things, and then I will go back to being silent.

I comment when I have something interesting to say, or something that pertains to their post. Or when I'm impressed, amazed or humbled by their words. I, also, will post something vaguely comforting if I believe them to consider me their close friend, and something traumatizing has happened to them.

As for my entries, I love when people post and am usually not disappointed if I don't get any. But there are instances that I'll post something hoping for responses and get nothing...and THEN I might get a little annoyed, but I get over it. :-p
