I'd love to be able to use my laptop at school to go online, there seem to be plenty of workable places I could plug in my laptop, but... the free client they suggest doesn't seem to exist. Hm....

Any alternatives? I know youse guys can come through for me. You all directed me towards my beautiful firefox, after all.

Ok question first though. Do you use a pc or a mac? If it's a pc there might be something on freshmeat.net or sourceforge.net that is opensource/freeware be it windows or linux. Download.com or majorgeeks.com might also have something for windows. Mac wise those other sites(except for download.com and majorgeeks) should have something along with tucows.com mac section. Personally I don't use wifi but my roommate has it. However in his case something came with his driver to set it up.(but he also had to search it out as he took xp off his laptop and stuck 2k on it)

start -> control panel -> system -> device menu

or

Start -> control panel -> network

Either or should show you if you have a wireless adapter. It should be the same in windows xp, 9x, and 2k. I've not really used XP but it's supposed to be similar to 2k. If you have the card in there it should have some sort of utility. Either way I think you need to know the name of the card to know what utility might work with it.

If I'm reading those sites correctly, than the WiFi client built in to Windows XP SP2 should be compatible. And if you don't have SP2, there's a wireless security update that's downloadable through Windows Update.

Never mind what I said above; though Windows XP does support wireless security, the protocol they want isn't built in.

But the free SecureW2 is downloadable here: http://www.securew2.com/uk/
