Weirdness...

I was replying to a post in customers_suck where somebody complained about people spelling simple names like "Bob" and "Smith".

They could have just been burned by running into people who actually DID ask them to spell it, so they've learned "never assume."

Exactly. The number of people I meet who ask me how I spell "Baker" or, worse yet, misspell "Connie" (Coney and Conie are popular variations, apparently) is astonishing.

And after I posted that I sat and stared at the comment.

Connie?

I mean, that's my name. I grew up always getting "Connie" and "Mommy" confused, and nowadays it's "Connie" and the Lizziey/Chris nickname "Honey". For years, I corrected teachers, every year. "Don't call me Constance, my name is Connie."

For some reason, nobody would understand me the first time. Or the second. Or the third. Finally they'd go "Oh, Connie!"

And then... I don't know. I got tired of correcting people. In high school, I started letting teachers call me Constance. Same thing in college. Online, I expect to be called Uly or Conuly - the only people who call me Connie online are Lizziey and Jenn. Some of my friends call me Concon, but....

So when I posted this, I looked at the name, and it didn't even feel connected to me anymore. It's like seeing somebody else's face in the mirror. I almost went and asked Jenn if that WAS my name! *laughs*

Maybe this is what happened to Jenn when she stopped being called Ginger. For years, she'd get mad at me if I called her Jen, and then one day I refered to her as Ginger and the person I was talking to didn't even know who I meant. And now we don't even call her Ginger in the family anymore, the only people who still do that are old family friends.

But if I'm chatting to Jazzy and one of us refers to an entry you've made or something, I think I've called you Connie then. But as I say, I can stop it.

Speaking as a fellow bearer of this nomenclature, although by choice rather than divine providence (aka my parents' fancy), I like it. Kind of. It's... endearing. But not lovely. My grandfather, who wasn't extremely literate in English but exceedingly so for an 70 year-old Chinese scholar, liked to call it "Cony". So there are worse misspellings. And just the other day, someone at Starbucks felt the need to draw "Colleen" on my tall mocha frap.

So.

..Am I weird that I adore it when people spell their names for me? I always feel so stupid stopping the call to verify the spelling of a name, or to say "Uhh, could you spell that for me?"

For curiosity's sake, when giving my name I always say "Ashley, with 'ley'" And say, then spell my last name very slowly.

I think I kind of get that unconnected to a name thing. I get weirded out if anyone calls me by my real name online, even the shortened version. I barely ever react to the full version IRL. Joey has just become like a real name for me.

Teachers always called me Katie. I corrected them bunches of times.

've become quite disconnected from my name. Sometimes in school when people say "Claire" I wonder vaguely who they're talking about before I realize that it's me. Clara, while not a big jump, just seems like me in my head. And I think, if anyone called me Figment in real life, I'd probably answer to it just as easily .

I get a bit mystical about names, I suppose, so the dissociation is purposeful. When certain people say words or names often enough, they get stuck in my head that way, and it can come to a point where I don't want to sound like my parents or my grandparents in my head, and I don't want to be who they meant when they said it. So I changed it!
