Holiday meme thingy
Nov. 21st, 2004 03:58 amI'm not reposting the list.
1. World peace. Since I know youse guys can't deliver, I'll settle for "actions that are generally helpful to the community or world at large". Do something charitable. Do several somethings charitable throughout the year. Either make peace with whomever it is you've been fighting with or cut ties altogether. That sort of thing.
2. Any of a number of books, I'll post a nearly full list later.
3. Paid userpics, again.
4. Gifts for the babies, I'll post a nearly full list later. (Edit: THIS IS WHAT I REALLY WANT. It's all on my amazon wish list)
5. A winning lottery ticket.
6. I could use a jacket.
7. Some good recipes are always nice, especially if they're not too complicated. (Edit: Thanks guys! I can use more, of course, but thanks for what I have now! *grins*)
8. Somebody to come over here and help me clean. Again.
9. My mom to quit smoking/drinking so much caffiene. Again, you can't deliver, so I'll settle for you making efforts to improve your health or bad habits. You're my friends. I want you to live a long time.
10. Any of a number of DVDs, once more with the full list.
Edit: My amazon.com wishlist is here.
The master list of wishlists is here.
Edit again: If you need my contact info, ask for permission to see this post. I reserve the right to refuse permission for any reason. Deal with it, I'm the one not getting the present.

From:Check my Memories on my LJ account, there's a section called Recipes.
Date: 2004-11-21 11:11 am (UTC)Chicken Paprika/Paprika Hendel
For each person:
1/2 boneless skinless chicken breast, frozen
1 small (tennis-ball size) onion, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon sweet or rose' paprika
2/3 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon flour
Cook the onion in the butter until soft. Stir in the paprika and reduce the heat. Rinse the chicken with drinking water and lay on top of the onion mixture. Cover the pan tightly and simmer for 45 minutes to an hour or until the chicken is done. Meanwhile, stir flour into the sour cream. Remove the chicken and cube. Stir the sour cream into the onion mixture (should be quite liquid from the chicken juices) and increase heat. Bring to a simmer, stir in chicken pieces and cook until thickened. Serve over egg noodles.

Date: 2004-11-21 02:05 pm (UTC)1 whole chicken
2-3 tablespoons minced garlic
4-6 branches rosemary
1 large lemon
salt & pepper
olive oil
Clean and dry chicken. Use fingers to lift skin from meat, but do not remove. Strip rosemary sprigs from branches, discard branches. Tuck rosemary sprigs and pinches of garlic under skin all over chicken. Sprinkle breast and back of chicken with salt, pepper, and juice from the lemon. Cut lemon into eighths, peel sections. Combine lemon sections with any remaining garlic and rosemary, stuff into cavity. Spritz chicken with olive oil and roast according to directions on the package.

Date: 2004-11-21 02:30 pm (UTC)1 pound Italian sausage links, casings removed and cut into 1-inch slices
2 medium onions, chopped
6 carlic cloves, chopped
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch cubes
2 cans (15 ounces each) cannellini or white kidney beans, drained
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) chicken broth
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
6 cups fresh spinach leaves, chopped
Shredded Parmesan cheese, optional
In a Dutch oven or soup kettle, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add onions and garlic; saute until tender. Add chicken; cook and stir until no longer pink. Stir in the beans, broth, tomatoes, basil and oregano. Cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Add spinach and heat just until wilted. Serve with Parmesan cheese if desired.
Yield: 11 servings (2-3/4 quarts)
Nutritional Analysis: One 1-cup serving (prepared with turkey Italian sausage and reduced-sodium chicken broth; calculated without Parmesan cheese) equals 220 calories, 5 g fat (2 g saturated fat), 48 mg cholesterol, 598 mg sodium, 20 g carbohydrate, 5 g fiber, 22 g protein
Diabetic Exchanges: 2-1/2 lean meat, 1 starch
I'm not a big fan of kidney beans, so I throw in a package of DiGiorno tortellini instead of the beans. And of course, in my world, the Parmesan cheese is never optional!!

Date: 2004-11-21 02:54 pm (UTC)Courgette souffle (that's Zuchinni, I think, if you're in the USA)
You need: (I apologise for the lack of proportions, it's an old family one, so bear with me!)
A large Marrow, or 4-5 medium courgettes
Butter or margerine, a pat of width about 2 thirds the length of your thumb
flour as needed
strong cheddar cheese
2 medium eggs
Chop the marrow/courgette into roughly the same size pieces, disgarding the ends. Steam or boil until soft, then liquidise.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large sized saucepan, and then add the flour little by little until it becomes a ball/starts sticking together. Then add the liquidised courgette little by little until you get a smooth liquid that should have no lumps. Add salt, pepper and grated cheddar cheese to taste.
Now get the 2 eggs...separate the whites and yolks...the yolks can be put straight in and stirred into the mixture. Put the whites into a separate bowl and whisk until stiff, then fold them in gently. Pour into a flat cyramic(dear lord, my spelling is appaulling) dish, and put on medium-high heat for about 30 mins. When it's done it should have turned mid brown on top. I admit it looks a lil strange, but it tastes good!

Date: 2004-11-22 04:11 am (UTC)Praline - no, I don't know why it's called that being as it has nothing to do with either the truffley substance or nuts.
125g margarine or butter
1 tablespoon brown sugar (or white if that’s all you have)
4 tablespoons golden syrup
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
250g biscuit crumbs (we usually have digestives)
Break up the biscuits by squashing them in a plastic bag or using the blender, but don’t make them too small. Melt the butter in a saucepan with the sugar, syrup and cocoa and stir till it’s well mixed. Pour over the biscuit crumbs, mix well and put into a tin or dish greased with a little bit of oil or butter. Leave till cold if you can! Then eat. It is very bad for you and very yummy and addictive. Enjoy :D
Well

Date: 2004-11-22 11:28 am (UTC)A spoonful of chocolate powder - herseys or fancier
Two spoonfuls of sugar
A spoonful of vanilla - perhaps less. I like lots of vanilla.
Couple of shakes of cinnamon
Put all of this in the coffee mug and stir it up. Will be kinda sludge looking, but will get better.
Pour a splash of milk in the mug. Whole milk is, of course, best, but any sort works. Heat for a few seconds and then stir some more. Should look more like chocolate sauce. Gradually fill up the mug with milk, stirring as you go. Then heat until steaming - usually two minutes. Be sure not to boil because then you get that nasty skin stuff.
Excellent with a shot of peppermint schnapps.
One amazingly easy recipe--
Date: 2004-11-22 05:21 pm (UTC)Coat some salmon fillets with vegetable oil and place in a baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Slice up some lemons and put the slices on top of the salmon. Bake at 350 for about twenty minutes (until salmon is all flaky.)
The measurements are vague, but easily adjustable. ;)
