So, the silly phone game I play has "teams"

And lemme tell you, my team picking was solely on the basis of "Are people in this team active" and "Do they have an open slot for me", because active team members send you more lives and you're more likely to win prizes in the team competitions, but most teams are 100% people who joined and never play.

But you can talk to each other, great, except that there's this one person who is very active and posts every single day about how they've changed the game so she can't win, she sucks, she is always stuck, she doesn't like it anymore, she's gonna quit - this all prompts a flood of "Oh, don't go, please stay" responses, and I can't help but wonder if that's the sole reason she posts like this.

One day I'm going to tell her that if she really feels that way she ought to quit, or at least shut up about it, because her posts bring my enjoyment of the game way down. Don't know what sort of response I'll get from everybody else who isn't her, but I can't be the only one who's itching to say it.

The randomly being assigned to a team in that game made me close and delete it. No, I don't want to be shoved into a room with strangers who have expectations that I'll participate in potlatch and weird competitions.

Ah. In this game you choose a team and don’t have to join at all.

Same in JJ. And teams can declare themselves "serious players" (ie joining in all the comps and team activities), "Casual" and "Recreational". I'm now head of a Recreational team (by dint of the original leader taking a 2 month break and the system promoting me) and I think there's only about 3 active playes, which is a shame - there's a couple of tasks that are a lot easier if someone else is doing the same one. But it's still fun.

It’s definitely certain that all changes made to the game are with the intent of making us spend more money, but either quit or don’t, y’know?

In your shoes I might tell her that the game seems to be stressing her out, and suggest she take a few days off and then decide whether to quit or to come back.

I did eventually say "Please, can we have a moratorium on complaints" and another person added on that "yes, of course the levels are harder than they were when we first started, because we've each played over 10,000 levels, they weren't going to stay easy" and she's definitely toned it down a LOT. I expect she'll ramp up again eventually, but right now it's at manageable levels, the occasional "I'm stuck and out of lives, bye for now" instead of an ongoing rant three or four times a day.

Re: your last link, sometimes I think police are the default responders to ALL emergency calls. This is what happens when we have integrated 911 services in cities that are over-supplied with cops and under-supplied with public firefighters and paramedics. (Volunteer firefighters and commercial paramedics are great, but rarely integrate quite so well.)

Oh yeah. I once called for an ambulance for my grandmother and instead got two pairs of cops, who were really pissy when I sent them around the back instead of leading them up one flight of stairs and down two more to get to the same place.

No, I'm not letting strangers into my house for no good reason, I don't care what uniform they're wearing.
