They did do one thing for me this morning, in that the water falling from the sky made me EXTRA wet!

Re animal gender in kids' books, my daughter consistently read the protagonist (human or animal) in kids' books as female when she was reading aloud to her daughters - until they learnt to read and started to complain that she was doing it wrong.

Chip Delany tells a story about trying to raise his daughter in a less-biased way, including carefully editing some toddler-age books for her to change all the "hes" to "shes" on animal characters, including Corduroy. And she picked up on it immediately and told him that Corduroy was a boy, obviously he was a boy bear, and wouldn't go along with him on this.
