We had quarter-sized hail Sunday. Fortunately Russet's car was under our carport and I was down in Alamogordo when it hit, so it was just noise.

I like them. Moonpie doesn't, poor doggie.

I'm mostly just glad we're up on this hill and won't flood. I guess the rain could come pouring down the hill, but it hasn't happened yet.

Our neighborhood is very hilly. I mostly forget how steep our hills are until I happen to glance out the back window while a truck or a bus is going by, and then I say "oh, wow, that sure is steep!"

But I don't complain about it, not since Sandy. That surge was not joking around, but we didn't see any of it. And we're really not that far from the water! It just can't make it up the hill. Even the bottom of my front porch steps is four feet above street level, and my back yard neighbors can all walk out of their basements without climbing stairs, because the back of the house, what was the basement has become ground level.

It flattens out, but the North Shore is all hills. Todt Hill is the highest point on the eastern seaboard! (And loads of rich people, so, not where I am!) You see these houses sometimes where it’s two stories of stairs from the street to the property. It looks so picturesque, but it’s a hassle even to trick or treat at them, I wouldn’t want to live there.

I’ve seen places with steep entrances like that, and I wonder what happens if someone is on crutches. Plus lugging groceries up all those stairs; not for me!

(Though if it’s a rich enough neighborhood, maybe they’ve found a way to outsource the inconvenience?)

Oh, my neighborhood's not particularly wealthy, though I think the houses were mostly built when it was, at least, the ones I'm talking about were. You'd have to go a bit out of your way to get to Todt Hill, and a bit further. I was there once. It's a steep walk!
