and completion of orientation. They really are taking anybody with a pulse, as judged by the extremely detailed list of instructions for appropriate behavior during orientation. I'd be more insulted, but that's good for me, I really need a job. If they had higher standards they would hire somebody with formal work experience, or at least an associate's degree.

(Don't think I've stopped applying other places, mind you, but I'm really not in a position to be picky, either.)

Yeah, I bet that would work to avoid fights!

Riverside Park’s goats will be baaaaaaaack for Goatham 2025, and they are hungrier than ever! This summer, we are excited to welcome five tenacious, invasive plant-eating goats to face off in New York City’s most anticipated *NEW* competitive eating event, “The Great Goat Graze-Off.”

Good luck with the job. It may be closer to taking any US citizen or legal resident who isn't eliminated for a specific reason, such as a criminal record or having been fired from a previous city job.

If one of their goals is to reduce unemployment, they might prefer to hire city residents who don't already have jobs. That would have the advantage of being easy to quantify: X number of people hired, including Y who have been unemployed for at least Z time.

They discriminate against people with criminal records? That's illegal in all provinces and territories in Canada.

But if someone with a criminal record can't get a legitimate job, what else can they do except commit more crimes to survive? It doesn't make sense.

It doesn't make sense, but also, depressingly, employers in states where they can't legally ask if someone has ever been arrested are less likely to hire qualified Black applicants, not more. It seems as though at least some of them are assuming Black people have been arrested, and assuming that white people haven't. When employers can ask, some eliminate white as well as Black applicants for that reason.

There was a move under Obama to "ban the box" that asks you about past criminal records.

My Canadian source on the Republicans trying to blame Canada for wildfire smoke isn't sure whether the politicians in question believe what they're say, or are only pandering to presumed-stupid constituents, and she isn't sure which would be worse. She also pointed out that Canadians have been breathing smoke from fires on the US side of the border, too.

Most Canadians probably aren't blaming the US for that, just for all the things our government is doing on purpose, of which there's plenty.

Too true, but "OMG the Canadians are sending us smoke, we must do something in response!" seems almost too linear for the current regime. If you told me that they're making decisions by reading the newspaper horoscope and then rolling 12-sided dice, it would be plausible.

Yay, paid employment! I hope it’s at least a decent match for your skills/interests, and if not such a good match, it’s a good stepping stone to whatever’s next.

Thank you for the goats link! I love the individual goat bios, and cannot decide which of them I most adore. If I could find someone with a truly discriminating goat I would love to invite it into my own garden to devour the nuisances, but alas.

OMG 45 degrees. Yikes. It has gone down to a pleasant 24 here today. Though this year's heatwave does not reach the horrors of a couple (?) of years ago when it got up to about 37 and I began to regret selling the swimming pool.

I... hmm, appreciate the irony of Comey being 'investigated' by Trump's regime.
