Oh god no.

You ever wonder if you should be rooting for a military coup or a killer asteroid? Yeah. Except the far right has been making a concerted push into the US military for the past few decades, so I guess it'll have to be the asteroid. But hey, it isn't all bad - sky-blackening clouds of dust should put the brakes on the current climate crisis!

(I really need to stop looking at the news, except that there's stuff in there I want to see! Also, not knowing about the specifics isn't as helpful as I think it ought to be.)

Sorry to disappoint but the next asteroid of DOOM isn't due until 2032 and NASA have downgraded its doominess. Could y'all manage a non-military coup? Asking for several billion friends. ;-)

Same way it has done everywhere a non-military coup has been successful: see also fall of the Berlin Wall and Eastern Europe for the successful ones you're probably most familiar with. I personally wouldn't choose to describe them that way but it was a playful reference to your choice of "military coup".

Yes, and history shows that, as they retreat, collapsing empires often bring the machinery of repression they've developed abroad and turn it on their own people at home (beginning with those groups easy to scapegoat for the empire's collapse). So overcome, and save the scapegoats, or wait until the empire completes its collapse (not recommended for internal use) then rebuild from the rubble.
