You ever wonder if you should be rooting for a military coup or a killer asteroid? Yeah. Except the far right has been making a concerted push into the US military for the past few decades, so I guess it'll have to be the asteroid. But hey, it isn't all bad - sky-blackening clouds of dust should put the brakes on the current climate crisis!

(I really need to stop looking at the news, except that there's stuff in there I want to see! Also, not knowing about the specifics isn't as helpful as I think it ought to be.)

I personally wouldn't choose to describe them that way but it was a playful reference to your choice of "military coup".

The feeling over this side of the pond is that perhaps the time is ripe to retake the Colonies... after all, our Parliamentary system is looking a lot better in comparison and King Charles is generally regarded as mostly harmless. If we promised to get rid of the Tanga Turd and his little cult we could probably walk in with a minimum of fuss. (and hey, we've still got the old chopping block at the bloody Tower.)

Yes, and history shows that, as they retreat, collapsing empires often bring the machinery of repression they've developed abroad and turn it on their own people at home (beginning with those groups easy to scapegoat for the empire's collapse). So overcome, and save the scapegoats, or wait until the empire completes its collapse (not recommended for internal use) then rebuild from the rubble.

All kidding aside? I do agree - sooner or later an asteroid or meteorite will take us out. We've all been afraid of it - since they figured out that's what did in the Dinosaurs and brought about the age of humans (assuming of course we didn't exist with the Dinosaurs).
