Hot sauce directs squirrels to dedicated feeders? 👀

Humans are the only mammals who really like "hot" foods. You can deter many mammals from eating things they shouldn't - like my suet! - by adding hot pepper. I use a specialty anti-squirrel hot sauce. I wouldn't want to put it on my foods, it's really intense.

(Allegedly, some squirrels will develop a taste for the stuff, and probably so will some deer and so on. Thus far, that hasn't happened.)

The hot sauce keeps the squirrels away from the birdseed and suet, but honestly, I don't like not feeding the squirrels. I just don't want to feed them the birdseed and suet!

At least where I live, they sell suet that already has hot pepper in it, which might be easier to deal with than hot sauce.

Yeah, I can get that as well. I just found a variety that the woodpeckers seem to especially like and I'm loath to experiment too much in case they don't like a new one.

Also, I stocked up back when the squirrels hadn't figured out how to get the top off the upside-down feeder yet.

It’s a common enough product. You can even buy birdseed pretreated.

Birds don’t have the receptors to detect capsaicin. Or much of a sense of taste. So they don’t care.
