Also, I now realize that we had the stage show soundtrack as kids, which explains a lot about why the movie lyrics never matched up with the ones I thought I knew.

It's interesting when a soundtrack album doesn't line up with the movie.  I first encountered this with the original Blues Brothers, got into an argument with a guy who insisted they were the same.  Turns out that blues performers can't sing the same song the same way twice, they just don't feel it.

Well, I'm sure it wasn't supposed to line up with the movie. It was supposed to line up with the stage production, which came first.
