Planned 9/11 military flyover prompts outrage; Mayor Bill de Blasio calls it ‘inappropriate’

It is inappropriate, especially with what looks like little to no warning. I've told you what happened that Memorial Day when there was a flyover I didn't know about, right? I ended up in the basement 15 minutes with the kids! They thought I was crazy! Whoever had this bad idea, I hope they have bad dreams for the next decade.

I'd wish them worse, but it looks like their vision of terror has been cancelled, thankfully. I don't like normal planes when they fly a little low, and I know I'm not the only one.

That last one they did without warning or announcement scared the living daylights out of us too.

For me, airliners would be preferable. For one thing, we can't *avoid* them - they still have to fly overhead. We can't just have them land in Iowa and make all the tourists take a bus from there.

But also, my memories of 9/11 very nearly start with my third period teacher telling us that the teachers didn't know much but that they did know that all the planes had been grounded, and that sentence being punctuated by the sound of fighter jets above us.

I was struck when watching Spider-Man:Homecoming that an Utterly Ridiculous/Grievous FX idiot ball McGuffinesque bit exists, namely the large plane full of Tony Stark's and Avengers' booty on the Tower's landing deck. In Midtown Manhattan.

I was an adult when 9/11 became what it now is; I've still not seen the Spider-Man movie that had to have a scene changed because the release was Too Soon. (Not because of the change or anything, just Life. I missed the second Toby McGuire Spider-Man and all of the X-Men movies too.)

They did not. The mayor and everybody freaked out, saying that it was inappropriate and tasteless (and these were the nicer comments) and so they rescheduled. I'm inclined to think that their defense of "it's just a routine drill, we cleared it with the FAA in advance like usual" is a little pissy given that a simple check of the calendar would've told them this was a bad idea (and it's no fair trying to push the blame back onto the FAA), but whatever, all's well that ends well.

I concur that it is rather pissy. At my most generous I'd have to say someone needs more sleep and fewer power trips pissing on them while standing near the third rail. More honestly, all the NCOs and mom friends have left the building and are letting the sycophants and or green officers fend for themselves.

It's not the FAA's job to remind people of What Dates Mean. (I'm also not sure the FAA has had enough sleep and few enough occasions of power trips in their presence. Generally speaking they can manage to stay away from exposed electrical. ;^) )
