conulyWe had been waiting for Angel (Ana), but it turns out that they finished watching on their own, the traitor.
1. Karen definitely improves when we don't see too much of her.
2. Nice increase in diversity!
2a. However, after having a whole episode with a trans kid, and then Kristy specifically scoffing at the term "feminine products", could we maybe all have switched to calling them "sanitary supplies" or "menstrual products" instead? Just thinking?
3. In the original series, with its weird timeloop, the characterization was mostly just "this is how the kids are" and there was little meaningful character growth and, consequently, little meaningful explanation as to why the kids were how they were. In this series it's pretty clear, for example, that Kristy is a raging control freak (true to how she was in the books) as a way of coping with her lack of control in other areas, and is also even more socially awkward than Maryanne, and only really able to express that through being bossy. So even though I like her less as a person, I like her a lot more as a character than I ever did before. There is clearly a real human fighting not to be a cardboard cutout.
4. But seriously, I felt like screaming during the, ahem, camp episode (Super Special). At all of them.
5. I don't remember the BSC bumping into Lainey during that book, I think that was another book (I am amazed at my recollection here, honestly), but I think it was dramatically appropriate.
6. The Kishi parents continue to be the worst BSC parents in the series. Some of the kid parents, in the TV show or the books, might be worse, but of our main cast they are awful. They're bad parents to Claudia, and they're not doing Janine any favors either.
7. The kid actors all look like the ages they're supposed to be, which is to say they look like children. I'm certain that the characters on the books looked older... but maybe it was just that I was younger than them when I read the books?
