I GOT AN ICE CREAM MAKER!

(And also, finally, bread machines came back in stock.)

(One of those two things is the staff of life.)

Alas, I forgot to stock on cream in advance, or indeed even any milk. I suppose I could make an emergency store run in the morning, but I'm a little concerned about the fact that thus far, all my emergency store runs have involved ice cream.

Ice cream makers rock!! I am not allowed to get one because I would only ever eat ice cream ever again.

I dunno. As you said, ice cream is the staff of life, right? Seems like all the store runs should be for ice cream.

As long as emergency store runs *coincidentally* include buying ice cream, then it's all right... At least that's what I tell myself. "OMG! I need toothpicks, today! Or was it cupcake papers? Say there's some chocolate mint chip I could use."

I can limit my intake of store bought ice cream but, the ability to make my own would not be safe for my waste line.

Ice cream is a perfectly valid reason for a grocery store run.

Scientific research has shown that ice cream is 1000% more effective than psychiatric medications for preserving sanity in 2020.

I mean, feeling like my recipes are getting use would feel pretty cool to me. I'm a "feed people" person, we're isolating. That's an exchange, if you like.

Well, heading to bed now, but here's my go-to source:

Also recommend Judith Olney's chocolate cook book. And there's a toasted coconut gelato out there that's pretty good.

Also, https://melissaknorris.com/pioneering-today-bake-your-own-bread-no-kneading/

Highly recommended. Tastes much like Brea bread, if you've have that.

Also, try any bread recipe labelled "Sally Lunn" for no-fuss bread that is shaped like a cake.

Fun non-milk/ cream things to base freezer treats off, as I'm sure you know: yogurt, lemonade (or any fruit juice), condensed milk (okay, technically milk but good and also calorie-dense and shelf-stable), avocados, sweetened beans, sour cream/ creme fraiche, fruit soups, pudding, coffee and tea granitas... I also like to eat semi-frozen salsa like it's trailer-trash gazpacho because I'm kind of weird. I also think I have an egg-based, non-dairy "ice cream" chocolate custard somewhere around here. Been thinking about basing a whole selection of ice creams off of the baked goods described in Robin McKinley's Sunshine. (Only got as far as a cheesecake ice cream with a lemon curd ribbon served on gingerbread, but it was pretty tasty.)

Also, if you find yourself getting an ice shaver for snowcones, you can use plain shaved ice (NOT too grainy/ slushy) to surprise people who need a bit of surreal disruption in their lives by presenting them with a snowball to throw or wear on their head on a sweltering summer's day, as needed.

I have a couple of wonderful recipes for no-machine, low-touch, no-sourdough bread, if wanted, too.

I have blogged many of my favourite ice cream recipes, just check my tags, probably "homemade ice cream", or something similar. (typing on a phone, on a short lunch break, so no link...)

Do you have the ingredients to make sorbet? It will melt faster than ice creams, but sorbet can be as simple as cranberry juice, sugar, and lemon juice.

We've made three batches of ice cream since Pestilence. Two were this awesome dark chocolate (we're out of it now and will need to make another batch).

And two days ago we made this strawberry with balsamic vinegar. [personal profile] shalmestere and I both found it too creamy -- one's first impression is "creamy" rather than "strawberry" -- but it's worth trying again and adjusting the cream-to-milk ratio. The balsamic vinegar isn't consciously perceptible, and I might try increasing it a bit.

Our ice cream freezer only makes a pint at a time, which is good for experimenting with different recipes, and good for fitting things in our limited freezer space. I suppose it would be good for our waistlines, if we weren't at home all day every day with plenty of time to make more batches.

Is it configured like the one in Star Wars, or is it a more modern freezer use style?
