(Why do I always say "the" ice cream truck instead of "an" ice cream truck?)

Either ice cream trucks are an essential business, because they sell food I guess, or he had gone rogue. Whatever, he wore a mask and buying ice cream cones was honestly the most exciting thing to happen to us since March. Better yet, it's the good kind of exciting.

(Except for the part where he was out of rainbow sprinkles. Bah.)

It's interesting that in any given geographic area, there generally IS only one ice cream truck. Why do ice cream trucks (assuming there are, in fact, many of them) not compete for sales territory? Or at least split a territory chronologically: you get even-numbered days, I do odd-numbered days, and we both work when the temperature is above 90F, or something like that?

Are ice cream trucks purely privately-owned, privately-owned franchises of The Company, or entirely owned by The Company? I think the first is unlikely; the other two possibilities explain why there's generally only one truck in an area, but replace that question with why there is apparently only one ice cream truck COMPANY in a geographic area.

Curious economic conundra.

I have lived in an area with competing ice-cream vans - there were, I think three, but at this point I can only remember that there was a pink one and a blue one. The reason I think there were three is I have a vague memory of three separate tunes (only one of which was Greensleeves)
