I grew up with DARE. Every time I walk by those ads, I think that this is so surreal.

They do also say that the safest bet is to not take illegal drugs at all, but on the whole, I definitely prefer this sort of advice than whatever they peddled when I was young.

It's progress. I know it feels surreal, but it's actually progress.

DARE doesn't work. You get a very short term statistical decrease for the youngest students, but it actually increases chances of use over the long haul and what small short term decrease they get disappears for higher grades.

DARE is a way for police departments to milk education dollars out of school systems.

The programs that actual work statistically are the ones where you get older peers (2-3 years older) to do real talk based on accurate information and things that actually happened to them and their friends.

Harm reduction saves lives. Science based approaches to drug education work better than law enforcement scams.

Oh, I know all of that and already did. I think this is a very good move on the NYC health department's part (although some say it doesn't go far enough by not recommending testing before using high-risk drugs). I just can't quite believe we're here.
