Disabling comments because you're scared of discussion. That's rude.
Deleting another person's post because YOU think that THEY do not like the way conversation is going even though THEY have not said anything of the sort... I don't even understand this. Let THEM delete THEIR own post... or admit that YOU are the one with a problem.
That is all.
Edit:
*giggles* I was pissed at something that happened in a comm I'm in. I'm not pissed anymore (yay) although I stand by the less inflammatory form of my statements (which runs "I disagree with...."). I really don't hold these statements for personal journals, just communities. So my view is "if you don't like comments on a post in your community, you freeze the threads or delete the comments, you don't delete the post unless you're the person who made it, and since it's a community, not a personal journal, you don't announce policy changes (or nonchanges) without giving any room for discussion". Because those are communities. Not journals.

Date: 2004-08-14 04:14 am (UTC)I understand that sometimes you might not want to discuss things with people, but why bring them up in the first place then? It becomes even more strange when it's a friends only post... it's like saying: Hey, I want all of you to know this, but don't you dare mentioning it to me, trying to comfort me or talk to me about this in any way. Wha?

Date: 2004-08-14 06:11 am (UTC)And bringing them up... well, it's a LiveJournal, so maybe I want to make something that is important to my life known without having to go further into it. Of course, you might make it private, then, but maybe people just want to share the pain/ joy/ whatever... without having to discuss. I don't do this myself, but I sort of understand it...
The second... well, I've never yet encountered that, either.

Date: 2004-08-14 08:13 am (UTC)As for disabling comments, I've done that for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
If you don't like the way someone keeps their journal, I would suggest either dealing with it, or taking them off of your list.
Personally...I don't pay $35/year ($10 for the extra icons) to have people tell me how to run my own journal.
No offense...that's just my take on the subject.

Date: 2004-08-14 11:16 am (UTC)Yeah, communities are different. Nobody should get to disable comments in a comm except the mod, and then only on flat announcements that aren't open to discussion.

Date: 2004-08-14 09:35 am (UTC)I stand by the reason (I had one and I believe I made it clear) for my deleting the entry in this community that i've been managing.
It was my understanding that the beginnings of an argument were underway, and rather than take the risk that things would play out, I decided to nip it in the bud.
I did make clear that I have no qualms with the discussion itself, but people have to understand that it's also important to give an LJ community a sense of order (especially when so many of them lack it). If you feel I was pursuing something else, i'm sorry to hear it and to have made you feel that way. "Rudeness" was not my intention.

Date: 2004-08-14 11:01 am (UTC)So you got me coming and going. First you delete somebody else's post. I'd have no objections to them deleting their own post, or you deleting it if you thought the post itself was bad, but if you're just upset at the comments, the appropriate thing to do is to freeze the threads. This way the poster can say "yes, that's what I wanted" or "no, actually, I liked what was going on".
Second, posting a change to policy and not allowing any debate on it... you own your journal, and you technically own your comm, but communities should be run by the members, don't you think?
And then I was already pissed. NOT pissed enough to take this up with you (sorry 'bout that) but pissed enough to whine in my journal. Which seems to have upset some of my friends. Oopsies.

Date: 2004-08-14 04:37 pm (UTC)I had every intention of only disabling the comments but one can only do so on their own entries. I am terribly wary of good communities going to Hell and it was my intention to prevent that.
As for a policy change, non-confrontation and all that was the policy to begin with. I have never created a detailed FAQ for this comm (as I have had to do for at least one unruly community), but it's common sense that one wouldn't not want things to stay calm.
I'd have no objections to them deleting their own post, or you deleting it if you thought the post itself was bad
That was the idea. I was only trying to make a call on whether or not the post was going to get crazy. Perhaps I made a mistake, and if so I regret it.
You're certainly still welcome to debate on these topics in the comm. You seem to have a lot to offer everyone, and I'm sorry if I made you feel unwelcome in any way. I hope you continue to participate.
