That name didn't exactly fill me with hope, and sure enough, a quick glance at their page tells me that whatever they claim, they're darn well right-wing.

They have a poll up on what George H. W. Bush will be remembered for. I'll give them their credit, they're smarter than, say, the AFA - they've stacked the deck so thoroughly that there's no way we can all pollbomb them. I bet they even moderate comments! (Admittedly, I haven't tried. Oooh, what should I say?)

Oh yes. Hoover has been around for awhile and they are a straight up conservative shop like AEI and CEI. Same funders too, I think.

Conservative does not mean Republican. yes, these das it pretty much does as a practical matter, but it did not always and may not in the future and to some degree still doesn't. They will go after Republicans who don't toe the conservative line.

It's like NARAL. They are non-partisan. But we no longer have Republicans who will openly support reproductive rights. So they end up basically supporting Dems, although they will call out Dems who they feel are not supportive enough of reproductive rights.

He did have at least one bit of positive legacy: supporting and signing the ADA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_with_Disabilities_Act_of_1990#Final_passage

My father knew George H.W. Bush; both of them were among the youngest of the Navy pilots in the South Pacific during WWII. He said Bush was an honest man, and from everything I've read about him, I think that was probably quite true.

My father was also an honest man, an officer and a gentleman, a lifelong staunch conservative Republican. If he'd lived, he would be horrified and shamed to see what the GOP has sunk to, yet would never believe that it's all the logical consequence of the GOP's policies since Nixon. So that's what I think about George H.W. Bush: a good and honest man who was egregiously wrong about a lot of important things, and thus with the best of intentions left a huge fucking mess in his wake.
