I and my group of mostly older Gen-Xer friends have been doing a version of Friendsgiving in place of a traditional family-focused thanksgiving for 20+ years.

Not the same thing, though. Us olds who celebrate Thanksgiving with friends instead of family are ~~doin it rite~~ doing something different than these whippersnappers holding a Friendsgiving on the weekend before Thanksgiving so they can both have a positive holiday experience and oblige their families of origin.

I think it's interesting that they're doing this to be able to do both.

ETA: OMG, it just dawned on me: their parents' Thanksgivings? Are our friends-oriented Thanksgivings. The millennials' 'rents are Gen-X or a bit older, no? Maybe these people have Friendsgivings because they want to have Thanksgiving that their friends can come to, not just their parents' friends.

OK, I had definitely not considered this angle. We have some older Millennials in our group, but we also have 2 teens (our group is remarkably childfree), and I can definitely see them doing a prior Friendsgivings in 5 or 6 years.
