Okay, so I bumped into [community profile] dailyprompt a while ago

And I noticed they weren't really updating daily. They were updating occasionally, which seemed to me to be worse than being utterly defunct.

So I volunteered to fill in the gaps! I have no idea what I am doing.

Anyway, that's only half the problem. The other half is the subscribers either aren't using the prompts or anyway aren't posting them, and it's like shouting into the void. I'm a big believer in priming the pump. It may not work, but I like the feeling of having tried, however futilely. So if you are the sort of person who occasionally does creative type things, well, you could do worse than to join and participate and signal boost.

I am really surprised that there are so few comments. In more than two months worth of prompts there are only a half dozen comments.

I'm surprised that those who prompt aren't putting in their own comment to prime the pump. Do they think they should take the prompt and return to their own journal for posting?

Sadly, the blogs have been really resistant to intentional acts to create discussions. I find that no one comments on provocative posts the I make but jump on inane stupid posts.

I never comment on something with a "Me too" answer. I have a couple of followers who really believe that they must say something even when there is nothing to say. But, Please, continue to be a "voice crying in the wilderness." We need you.

Oooh, where is this dailyprompt? I've been looking for good prompting sites ever since Taming the Muse shut down. ;-(

I would be totally there for an iZombie comm! There's quite a few people on my f-list that like it, I think!

I find this odd too. And, honestly, a little irritating. But I think the problem is in part that provocative posts require a little more attention, and that can be tricky when people skim posts on the elevator or at work.

I also think blogging has become more about self-reflection and everyday musings than the topical and often nerdy blogging that used to exist. Because I've looked up probably hundreds of blog prompts now, trying to find ideas, and 80% of the prompts are things like "what's your favorite color?" That's what a lot of people genuinely want to blog about. And to be fair, you CAN actually make a more provocative post with some of those if you put in the effort. Plus, it works for some people, and that's totally fine. However, I'm definitely with you - I'd rather get into the nitty gritty.

tl;dr - links generate more conversation than thought provoking posts, which mostly generate thoughts.

i think this is a great point, and there's a lot of truth to it. Even if they don't generate conversation! You post a lot of links and I always enjoy it, because while I don't usually comment on every single one, and sometimes not at all, I definitely notice and it gets me thinking.

I was posting links for a while, YEARS and YEARS ago. Maybe I'll start doing that again. I'm not even really sure why I stopped, because it was fun, and I think it did generate more discussion.

I had some this morning. It was pretty good. There were lots of peppercorns in it but there wasn't any noticeable heat, though. That's my only criticism.

Tomorrow I'm going to try "Tall, Dark and British." I love chai, so I'm expecting to enjoy that one quite a bit.

I think the key is probably in cracking them a little bit. I don't know. It's still pretty tasty.

Taming the Muse used to allow participants to suggest prompts. They had some fairly elaborate rules where they tracked how many weeks in a row people posted but you could keep it simple: post a story response to a prompt and you'll accept a prompt from them kind of a deal.
