That's weird.
Dec. 31st, 2017 04:50 amMy first Kindle, the one I thought was totally busted and I planned to take apart and try to repair for fun? It's... working again. Just out of the blue. Last night I plugged it in, today it - as usual - didn't turn on and the screen still said uncharged, and then a few hours after unplugging it all of a sudden the screensaver changed and I was able to turn it on. Weird, weird, weird.

Hate.
That.
And I will fight for my right to tinker, to my last breath. If you can't fix it, you don't own it!
Here you go. Or here.
As you can see, I'm quite militant about this! Especially after a glass of wine.

Date: 2017-12-28 04:11 pm (UTC)And THAT is why I don't own a Kindle. I have a program that lets me rip the DRM off of the iBooks that I own and turn them in to regular epubs that I can read anywhere. Amazon just has too much of a lock on those things for my taste. (there may be such an app for Kindles, I've never researched it)
The thing that REALLY soured me on Kindles was the 1984 incident. Amazon found that their rights to 1984 were screwed up and they weren't allowed to sell it, so they used their WhisperNet to yank all copies from everyone's Kindle and issued a refund. There was a high school student working on an AP paper, reading the book and making notes, said paper was going to be part of their college application packet. When the book was yanked from their Kindle, all of the notes were irretrievably lost.
iPads may be a walled garden, but they're practically open source compared to how locked down a Kindle is.

Date: 2017-12-27 11:07 pm (UTC)Clint Barton being deaf is IMPORTANT. I hate that it's been ignored in the MCU.
Spiritual Abuse is universal. It happens in EVERY religion. I'm glad to know that there are people paying attention.

Date: 2017-12-27 11:27 pm (UTC)Seriously, this is the sort of bullshit that happens when people ignorantly promulgate PFL as some sort of holy cause. If the person is disabled, then you can't put the person first if you ignore the disability.

Date: 2017-12-28 01:54 am (UTC)That did not go where I thought it would. Lyrica?! Lyrica?!?! I can sorta see the clinical logic here, but... is pregabalin available in generic in Greece? It isn't here, so this isn't just dangerous, it's also insanely expensive.
I suppose we should be grateful they aren't just feeding them alprazolam and quetiapine. Do they not have prazosin in Greece?
The psychologist is right: you don't open up trauma work with someone in an unsafe or transient situation, because you can do them serious harm that way. It would seem to me there's no way to do psychotherapy for trauma in a refugee camp. That's the psychological equivalent of doing surgery without antisepsis. The problem here is much bigger than mental health care not being provided to the refugees.

But no. Sometimes I don't respond because I hate admitting I may have been mistaken about something (seriously, hate it), or because I'm processing, but I really, really value your replies to those articles etc.

Date: 2017-12-28 03:59 am (UTC)In the states, you'll generally find at least supplies to put things IN cans near anyplace there's a high concentration of LDS/Mormons, because their religious precepts include preparing for emergencies and having several months worth of food on hand. (I detest how they treat women and minorities and non-straights, but "prepping for emergencies" is usually a good idea...)
I myself DO home canning, but in jars. I don't have the equipment to properly stuff things in metal cans, so I haven't even tried. Jar-canning is something I grew up with, and pressure canning (as long as one isn't being stupid on timeframes) always works. Unlike most of my mother's attempts at pickles and hotwater canning.... :)

Yea, she's a "non-taster" as near as I can tell. All the supertaster characteristics came from dad's side of the family.
