What is it aboutasperger that attracts the trolls? We don't even get good trolls - this is the shittiest trolling I've ever seen! Where's the drama? The entertainment? The moderators?
What I hate most about the trolls is how it draws out people who are in the community but seem to be in some kind of denial about themselves (uran comes to mind) who then use it as an excuse to complain about what a bunch of complainers we are.
My approach is just to keep quiet. This too shall pass.
BTW I've finally added you, not sure why it took this long :)
Might I suggest, tentatively, that the website you guys have linked on your entries page to explain aspergers is a rather silly one with many spelling and grammar errors which does not explain why people with Asperger's have any kind of difficulty in life, but rather lists symptoms which seem positive and in no way detrimental--high IQ, honest, open-minded. It doesn't make it sound legitimate, and to the uninformed, would make extremely light of the condition. I would suggest you find a more professional and complete site to link to.
It's not my comm. You can ask there, if you like, but...
I happen to like the site myself. Most people in that comm know what AS is and don't need yet another medical site that only lists all the terrible horrible things about asperger's/autism. It's nice to have a humorous site, especially one that isn't the ISNT.
Though that would explain the trolls. Some people have a hard time respecting others, and the whole no-cure emphasis of the comm must be devastating to their little-bitty minds.
i'm making a friends cut. im planing on cutting you because i don't read your journal often, and as far as i can tell, you never read mine.
unless you've been reading it and not commenting - which is NOT likely, then as far as i can tell, your not read it. in fact, i'm sure you really couldn't care less right about now. so sorry, but i'm deleting you from my friends list. if you want to be re-added.. just comment on the friends only page..
Actually, my commenting habits suck. NOBODY gets comments. My own sister doesn't get comments from me. But you don't need to tell me if you're taking me out of the friends list, I promise I won't be upset.
I'm not so much angry about the troll herself (as I've dealt with this specific one on other forums - was posting about animals needing adoption, yet posting pictures of cut-up animals in her personal journal and laughing at the animal-adoption folks). I'm angry because the girl who posted the original message thought she had done something wrong because of the troll's reaction.
What angers me most is when I feel like I'm under attack from one of the 'regulars' of the forum. I'm overweight, a geek, and I dress funny. I don't like being told to 'get a life' because I'm different. *sigh* I think I'm going to go eat lunch... that at least should keep me sane...
That was why I was careful to remind people it was a troll & the best way to deal if you don't want to be baited.
That regular makes me feel like that too. She doesn't realise body image is one of her own obsessions. I've seen her pick apart skinny people on her LJ for stupid things like having a square butt or being older so we don't really stand a chance.
I hope my reply to her makes you feel better(if you read it).
Yes, that comment really disturbed me too (about geekiness and various characteristics). I read fanfic! So what? If people are happy with themselves, then why does it matter? And if they're *not* happy with themselves why make them feel worse? I didn't really see how that post applied.
Quite honestly, what's got me curious is that we appear to have gotten two of them at once and I can't figure out how they're related. The usual trolls are smart enough to make fake accounts for it. These two were both using their real accounts. It seems pretty stupid to me.
I'm wondering if maybe something was posted elsewhere and they both just followed a link. If so, I'd really like to know where that link is.
I've seen you mention that you're autistic, but I've also seen how intelligent you are. So I put two and two together, and was wondering if Asperger's is what you have? I know people with it are highly intelligent people, and that it's a high functioning form of autism.
I'm just curious, because I've mentioned it several times in my journal, and even bought a book about it, because my older son (Lucas) seems to show a lot of signs of Asperger's, at least in my opinion.
He hasn't even come close to being diagnosed with it, but it has been mentioned, just as a side note. Right now they're taking the bipolar approach, but they're still trying to figure out what's going on with him.
If he is ever thought to have it, I just might come to you with questions, if that's ok. I've never known anyone with it.
Well, I technically am AS, but AS != HFA. Quite a few people on asperger aren't diagnosed as AS but as autistic. Autism isn't incompatible with high intelligence. Anyway, I call myself autistic because it's an easier word to say, and I like it more anyway.
You probably do know other aspies, but not diagnosed aspies. The current theory is that AS/HFA is responsible for both the "geek/nerd" stereotype and the "absent-minded professor" stereotype. Not that all geeks are aspie, etc. etc. etc. but that it's a common enough thing.
And you can certainly ask me questions, but I'm not the expert. I'd suggest autism, but they're... a little "curebie" (and often ignorant). This isn't the time for a discourse on that subject, you'll have to wait for me to get back to you. Djusk' a.
