I like the sound of spurious. I'm not a native speaker and I had to look it up. Mike as a shortcut for microphone is funny. :)

Really, "mike" and not "mic"? The latter has totally replaced the former as the abbreviated name for "microphone," much to my irritation because "mic" looks to me as if it should be pronounced with a short "i".

I get that, but I don't like "mike" so much because I keep wanting to stick a cap M on it.

i was gonna say. i use both but i have read lots of scorn for "mike"

i also use "bike" interchangeably for both bicycle and motorcycle which I think is a Britishism/not so common.

I use "bike" the same way, and I'm sure I've heard it around before--you are not alone. :)

Maybe - what were your plans?

So far today, my accomplishments comprise a)give cat his medicine, b)water plants, c) talk to kid on phone, d)sweep leaves off deck, e)prepare and eat canned soup.

Words like imbroglio just suck. Not just because of that "Are you a Martian?" look one would assuredly get for using it (as if that weren't enough!) but moreso because of silent g, which has NO fricking place in the ENGLISH language, and is nothing but trouble wherever it occurs. Not that that's the hill I'd pick to die on (there are so many from which to choose!) but.... just sayin'.

My word for the day is 'obloquy', since I used it in conversation with my daughter today, and then commented that she was one of the few people I knew who would know that word. The true purpose behind education is making people worth talking to.
