Thanks for the links!

Re: "A Patient Gets a New Transgender Surgery She Helped Invent" I noticed that the folks who actually invented the procedure aren't getting credit.
During her research though, Anthony came across a paper describing the work of some doctors in India who were building vaginas a bit differently. They were performing surgeries on women with a rare disorder that causes the organ to develop abnormally or not at all. So they had to start from scratch, which requires a lot of material. They found a way to do that with tissue from the peritoneum, which is basically a bag of loose tissue that encircles the inside of your abdomen and holds your guts in place. She brought the paper into her next consultation and showed Ting.

I wish those doctors in India were named, and their paper given a link.

"Seven Days of Heroin" made me cry. We are failing people so hard!

HEAR, HEAR!

This Ting person sounds pretty clever, but a framing of "surgeon heroically figures out how to reproduce a complex surgery from just an academic paper and observing other surgeons" would have been more honest.

Yeah. *eye-rolly icon goes here* I wonder if they're women, too, since they're specifically doing surgery to help women.

A few years ago, when I was still working at the bank-- oh, I know, it was the 20th anniversary of some part of the whole OJ Simpson thing, so it was all over the radio station we had on-- We had a young teller who was just 'I don't get it? I don't understand what this is all about.' She had just turned 19 - she hadn't been born yet for OJ Simpson, etc. and we ended up explaining that, Rodney King, etc. to her and she was just 'ooooohhhh!' and then we also got talking about 9/11 and yeah, she barely had any concept of that, either.

It seemed like a very odd, mmm, cultural gap, I guess.

idk. I mean, I really had no clue who OJ was other than a famous sportsball guy, but the reading of the verdict will always be one of those 'where were you/what were you doing when?' moments for me.

I was already interested in a career in the media at that point, so I was definitely coming at it all from a different angle.

I would've hated being forced to go to Fun Group Activities in middle school. (As distinct from something I specifically enjoyed...art classes would've gone over fine.)
