I really hope they never decipher the Voynich Manuscript, I like the fact that there are some unsolved mysteries....

The school lunches article brought back memories of elementary school. We had half an hour for lunch, including waiting in line, etc., but still wasn't enough for me - I was a slow eater. My mom worked for the school district, so she knew that there was no way the school was going to change. That left as the only possible solution changing the other factor: Me. I remember my dad telling me about how when he was in the navy he only had 10 minutes to eat a meal and constantly urging me to eat faster so I could finish my lunch at school in the allotted time. If I don't consciously slow myself down, I still tend to plow through a meal in under 15 minutes.

Oh, I'm sure there are much worse things. I've just been noticing recently how often I'll be telling some story from my childhood and discover that people are looking at me in a vaguely horrified way and telling me "You know, that's really not okay."

I don't remember how long our lunch period was in elementary school, partly because it included a recess break as well as lining up and eating (once you're done eating, hit the playground until the lunch period is over). But I do remember in high school it wasn't very long, especially if you were buying instead of brownbagging. Between that and all my time in retail with half hour lunches I am terrible about bolting my food. I'm not sure how to eat slowly.

One of Michelle's friends is one of those wealthy Floridians. She had a storm party documenting the storm as it tore up her pool house. I can't even.

Did you ever see the Vice episode on babies born in Fallujah? The effects of all the chemicals and DU used has brought some really messed up results.

Thank you for the subreddit troll article, that is beautiful.

I also hope Silicon Valley receives controls. They approve of immigration but because it allows them to outsource skilled local labor a la H1B. They support a number of things that I think are for the better, but at the same time it comes at a risk to all the skilled youth labor that colleges keep turning out.

poetry plagiarism being that blatant and wide-spread is both surprising and not surprising as a semi-professional poet. What is interesting is not that one or two lines or taken, expanded upon (which I wouldn't even be bothered by) but the nearly entire poems.

I too love the subreddit article.

Sam Bee did a piece on the Life After Hate group, interviewing Christian Picciolini. Bill Moyers interviewed Angela King last month. Yay, they crowdfunded more than the $400K they lost of federal funding.
