These are all the ones I wanted to post yesterday, but didn't. There's a high preponderance of serious. I'm not sorting it, too lazy right now.

Calling cards: Some years back, I attended an event in a venue which had long been the headquarters of a large women's club. The walls were lined with pictures and mini-bios of former members. And virtually every woman there -- all of them socially and politically active, movers and shakers in their own right -- was identified as "Mrs. Husbandsname". The few who weren't were spinsters. It was unutterably sad. Yes, it was "the custom of the country" and I'm sure they were perfectly happy with it (never having had it suggested that any other option might be available), but it's still erasure.

Myopia cell: Oh great, now there's another reason for extrovert parents to bully introvert kids to "Go outside and DO SOMETHING!" when all we want to do is read. OTOH, there's no reason that you have to sit inside to read...

Serial killer algorithm: And then there's the elephant in the room -- most serial killers focus on classes of victim that nobody cares much about, because they know perfectly well that this increases their chances of getting away with it for a long time. The Gary killer focused on black women who were (at least sometimes) prostitutes. The Craigslist killers focused on poor middle-aged men with no family or community connections (hence the bait of a short-term job offering decent pay). Some serial killers focus on the homeless, some on gay men. But targeting sex workers (of either gender) is depressingly common, and it's done because people think they deserve whatever happens to them. And so the cops shrug and put the data in the cold-case file and go on about their day.

Re serial killer algorithm. I went to the site linked in the article, because someone I know was murdered some years ago, and I never heard any resolution to the case. I discovered that the reporting tool divides cleared and uncleared cases, so I had to check both for that year in my city, separately.

The lists listed victim race.

The cleared list was 90% white. The uncleared list was 100% black.

I just closed the window and walked away before I punched something expensive.
