Apparently, one day last week there were two overdoses at the St. George Ferry Terminal. Which is sad. And that editorial goes along fairly normally until the last paragraph:

And we've had the debate: Use naloxone to save overdose victims or let nature take its course? It's a different conversation when it's a friend or a loved one who's involved, but still the debate rages. Because there is no end to the drug scourge in sight.

THAT IS NOT A DEBATE. There is no debate here. What sort of amoral monster do you have to be to think that there is a debate here!?

Every once in a while I think "It might be good to be more on top of local news", and then the Advance reminds me why I don't bother. Never change, guys. Never change.

I suspect the (not-so-)subtext here is "it would be nice to save white addicts' lives, but is it worth it, when that means we can't let non-white addicts die?"

"I suspect" because I am not clicking through to read the editorial. (I take your description in the same vein as [personal profile] james_davis_nicoll's "memetic prophylactic advised" tags.

I dunno. The enthusiasm for seeing white addicts die is pretty high. :(

There seems to be a large swath of the population that is indifferent toward putting forth the effort to understand another person's situation unless similar circumstances have impacted them personally.

...I don't know how to fix them.
