is specially unfair against their kids?

Two great examples in the comments here:

"Just over half of the city’s roughly 440 high schools have what are called “limited unscreened” programs, which are not allowed to admit students based on factors like their middle-school grades or attendance."

I found your problem. All schools should use grades and attendance as admissions criteria, back-filling with poorly performing and truant students as required (which will only happen with the bad schools). Signing your name on a form or showing up somewhere is nowhere near as predictive as your attendance and performance at your current school.

This whole system, as described, is just mentally retarded.

The system should be two-tiered. Regular high schools should be zoned for the neighborhood. This prevents ghetto kids from coming into schools in nice neighborhoods and fouling them up with bad behavior and crime - thus lowering property values and tax revenue for the city.

Specialized high schools should base entrance on exams, or auditions, or grades depending on the type of specialized school.

Simple and effective.

Those two people aren't even pretending not to be jerks, and the second one is blatantly racist/classist as well. I called his comment dystopian and got this reply:

You are the one who supports social engineering. I support the free market - you are the one with a dystopian vision, not me.

Zoned schools are, by definition, not the free market. FFS, it's bad enough to be an asshole, but do you have to be completely ignorant as well?
