Why Aren’t More Young Women Choosing Set-It-and-Forget-It IUDs?

Actually, what this suggests to me is, contrary the article, the young are neither stupid nor ignorant, but rather a much vaster population of them than is presently known to are actually taking "birth control pills" for the other widely known benefits, such as menstrual pain reduction, premenstrual mood stabilization, acne treatment, menstrual schedule regulation or elimination, etc. I.e. maybe young women are taking it off-label. If you get an IUD, your health insurance isn't going to feel like paying for your pills any more; getting them to pay for pills when you already have an IUD means convincing an MD you need them badly enough that they're willing to fight your insurer for you.

And "a doctor can remove it any time" is disingenuous. More accurate is, "a doctor can remove it at any time you can get a doctor to remove it." If you have a complication with a pharmaceutical, you can just stop taking it. If you have a complication with an implant, you have to make an appointment with someone it is hard to make an appointment with to remove it. Or you wind up in an ER.

I predict that if hormonal birth control were available OTC, then IUD adoption would increase.

That last link was a good nudge to speak out more often.

My daughter, who'll be 27 in August, got a Paraguard IUD a couple of years ago. She has migraine with aura, so she can't use any of the hormonally-based birth control methods.

She loves it because she never has to think about it. She had to go one time to get it, and Obamacare paid for it free and clear (otherwise it would have cost over $1000) - now it's in place till she goes to have it removed. She can't lose it, forget it, use it incorrectly, have it taken away from her, be unable to afford it, or be denied access to it. There's no pills to take, no devices or goo to fool with, nothing for her partner to see or feel - it's just there, till she wants it not to be. How perfect is that?

Her best friend got one too, after having been less than satisfied with the patch, and is just as pleased. Definitely the wise way to go for any young lady who knows it'll be years before she's ready to have a baby.
