I bought ten pounds of rice a while back. Crammed as much as I could into a big jar, and I've been working my way through the remaining three pounds or so in the bag. Haven't been eating much rice lately, so it took some time.
Today, I made it through the bag! Opened the jar for the first time since I put it in there, easily a couple of months ago... and the lid is completely webbed up.
Yup. Open bag sitting around is fine, jar is completely contaminated with pantry moths. Now, in the normal course of things I'd say those are more of a nuisance than a health hazard, and might well just pick out the one moth or tiny bit of webbing and move on with my life. My life on the edge, guys. I rinse my rice anyway.
But OMG, there's a lot of them. Because they've just been eating and breeding in that jar for months, with nobody to notice them and say "Hey!" and stick 'em in the freezer.
Well, lesson learned. From now on, all rice, and flour, and cornmeal, it all goes right in the freezer for a week when I buy it. Ugh. (And I keep thinking "do I have to throw it all out?", but yeah, I pretty much do. Rice is cheap, and I got it on sale which is why I got so much of it, but ugh!)
