As you may have heard, Suzette Haden Elgin has died

About a week ago now. She hadn't been a presence on LJ for a few years due to health issues that kept her from communicating.

I hadn't realized how much we were all lacking her presence until I read the LanguageLog tribute to her. They link to some of the comments she made on their blog, and those comments jump out at you. You don't even need to glance at the attribution to know who said them. The world really is poorer without her.

Native Tongue was such an important book to me, as was Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. I'm saddened at her passing.
