Hannah's Winter by Kierin Meehan is about an Australian girl living in Japan with a Japanese family. It has fantasy elements, but there's a lot of every day life, too. I enjoyed this one.

Katherine Paterson has some historical novels set in Japan. I haven't read any of them. I have heard that Paterson's work tends to be depressing, so that might be something to keep in mind.

Dorothy Hoobler has some historicals (I think. They might be mysteries) set in Japan. I also haven't read any of these.

There are a lot of manga series set in present day or historical Japan. I'm not sure how much information one would get about the culture from those. Some of them have had details altered in translation to make them more American.
