But the girls are doing that and have banned me from the kitchen. I gave them clear instructions, and it's hard to screw up soup, so we shall see what we shall see.

My copy of the Historical Atlas of the Ancient World came in the mail. OMG. I love it! My dad would've been all over it, and it's a pity he died before it was published. I'm definitely getting the rest of the ones by this author, John Haywood.

We've been taking our time with ancient history, better to go deep than wide, right? (We may have to do catch up over the summer...? EEEP!) We finally covered Hammurabi yesterday, and the girls made an interesting insight. They took the note from the preamble that the laws were meant to keep the strong from harming the weak literally and suggested that this might be why hitting somebody greater than you "only" gets you a whipping instead of having to pay a fine - because maybe you can't afford to pay a fine for somebody wealthier than you, and they don't need that much money anyway! It would have helped if the source we were using told us how much one "mina" is. Wikipedia states that it's about 1/4 of the yearly pay of an agricultural worker, so that's quite a lot! But further googling says in modern terms it's about $600, which is still a lot, but not 1/4 your yearly pay. I wish I had more information about what it was worth when the Code was written down, that would answer a lot of questions.
